A state funeral was held for National Artist Nora Aunor at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig on Tuesday.
Aunor passed away on April 16 due to an acute respiratory failure following a medical procedure. She was 71. President Rodrigo Duterte signed a proclamation naming Aunor and seven others as national artists.
Aunor was given a state funeral with full military honors after the necrological services held at The Metropolitan Theater in Manila. At the services, many elderly people attended, with some signing Aunor's signature tunes.
The Taguig rites were attended by her children, family, friends, and supporters. As her burial spot was being prepared, a recording of her song You are the Superstar of my Life was being played.
On Tuesday, President Ferdinand Marcos issued Proclamation No. 870 declaring April 22, 2025 as a "Day of National Mourning" over the passing of Aunor.
"The passing of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, also known as Nora Aunor, is a great loss to the Filipino people and to the nation's cultural and artistic community", Marcos said.
Marcos added that Nora Aunor's "outstanding contribution to Philippine cinema, television, and music has left a lasting legacy on the nation's collective memory and identity"
Aunor became the country's top singer a few years after winning the amateur televised singing contest Tawag ng Tanghalan at 14 years old. She later became one of the top Philippine actresses, with one of her early hits Three Years Without God, depicting life under the Japanese Occupation during World War II.
