Survey shows majority are ''very angry or outraged'' over corruption in flood control projects

A survey shows that the majority of Filipinos are "very angry or outraged" over the massive corruption in government flood control projects.

OCTA Research head Ranjit Rye said the poll shows that the majority or 60 percent of Filipinos "feel outrage" while "30 percent have anxiety and disappointment" and nine percent were sad because of the corruption issues in the country.

"Majority of those who are angry and anxious are from Gen Z and Millennials," he said.

Gen Z were those born between 1997 and 2012 while Millenials were born between 1981 to 1996

"More than 60 percent of Millennials and Gen Z are outraged, so it is a large force. The outrage and anger is a very powerful emotion and this can accelerate the development of a strong social movement. Since they comprise the bulk of our voting population in a real sense there is a movement for change, it could change governance from medium to long term and it could have an impact on politics come 2028," he explained.

Rye said the survey also shows that most of the Filipino people want "justice apart from accountability".

"They are not asking for charter change, they are not asking for a snap election. They are asking for a very indefinite agenda of reform and it was also outlined in the survey what they want. And you will see from the ranking that people want justice apart from accountability so they want people to go to jail," he said.

"Majority of our own respondents want to see some of the money returned.Restoring trust in government and improving infrastructure is less of a priority," he added.

Rye also noted that if the government did not do anything "it could spiral into a massive crisis of legitimacy".

"The threat of destabilization cannot also be minimized because there is a real threat and the goal here is to broaden and deepen our democracy," he said.

When asked if the outrage being felt by the people will also stick to the politicians, Rye said that based on his own latest reading "of who's going to win in 2028, it is still (Vice President) Sara Duterte not by much but significant." Robina Asido/DMS
