President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged the public to "ponder on the Lord's perfect example of compassion and self-giving" as the nation observes the Lenten season.
In a statement on Sunday, Marcos said Holy Week is a "solemn commemoration of Jesus Christ's passion, death, and resurrection, let us ponder on the Lord's perfect example of compassion and self-giving".
"Like Christ, may we remain resilient and optimistic in life, despite all the challenges that come our way", Marcos said.
"I hope that we will regain strength in the presence of our family and loved ones for us to be more dedicated in doing His will, most especially to those in the peripheries He entrusted under our care. May we have a meaningful and blessed celebration., the President added.
Several devotees flocked to churches on Sunday morning with their palm fronds to signify the start of Holy Week.
