Brawner: AFP to boost missile systems, warships, and fighter jets for credible defense deterrence

2025/4/6 英字

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is set to significantly ramp up its modernization efforts with plans to procure more missile systems, warships, and multi-role fighter jets as it moves toward completing its air and missile defense integration.

This initiative was outlined by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. during his historic participation in the Raisina Dialogue held from 17 to 19 March 2025 in New Delhi, India.

“We are looking at acquiring more missile systems to complete the integration of our air and missile defense. Alongside this, we will be purchasing more warships and multi-role fighter jets to build a strong and reliable deterrent force,” he said.

The AFP’s modernization roadmap is anchored on a long-term strategy to develop both capability and deterrence. Brawner underscored the importance of strategic partnerships, particularly with India, noting the successful defense collaboration exemplified by the BrahMos missile system.

“India is a vital partner. Beyond procurement, we are looking into joint manufacturing, technology transfer, and local production in the Philippines to support our growing defense industry,” he added.

Brawner’s attendance at the Raisina Dialogue marks the first time the AFP has participated in the annual conference, reflecting the Philippines’ commitment to deepening international cooperation and addressing shared security concerns. AFP Public Affairs Office
