AFP says security situation ''stable'' despite alleged corruption on flood control projects

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assures that the country's security is "stable" despite Vice President Sara Duterte's recent statement expressing her belief that the government is no longer stable amid alleged massive corruption involving lawmakers on flood control projects.

"Well, at this crucial time politically motivated distractions are like static on a radio. They make noise but they don't actually change the signal. Our focus is locked on our mission and that is to protect the people and secure the state," AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla.

"I can't speak for the whole country but the AFP will make sure that we will perform our mandate accordingly to make this happen for the whole country. Security wise yes," she said, when asked if the country's security remains stable despite allegations of corruption in government.

There were reports of possible withdrawal of support by the military following the revelations of alleged million peso kickbacks by lawmakers, public works officials and contractors before a huge protest rally on Sept. 21. The Palace denied this and insists that the military is behind the government.

In an interview with reporters, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. admitted that all kinds of organization have "discontent" but he says that the military will remain supportive of the constitution.

Teodoro also emphasized that the solution to the "political problems" in the country is not the military.

"It (AFP) remains supportive of the constitution, naturally. And the chain of command is very important. And it is important they do not do roles that are not theirs to play," he said.

"We have already had several experiences with military interventionism and I think the country has learned…should have learned its lesson," he added.

Padilla also assures that the AFP is a "solid and disciplined organization" that "remains professional through all of" the recent challenges.

"Our loyalties remain to the Constitution and to the flag," she added. Robina Asido/DMS
