Marcos open to reconciling with Vice President Duterte

2025/5/20 英字

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday said he is open to reconciling with Vice President Sara Duterte and her family following the results of the 2025 midterm elections where the administration coalition settled for a tie with the opposition in the senatorial race.

Five candidates of Marcos' Alyansa and five from Duterte's PDP-Laban made it to the Magic 12, with former Senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan making up the total.

"Yes, I don't want trouble. I want everyone to agree with each other, that's better. I already have a lot of enemies. I don't need enemies, I need friends," Marcos told broadcast journalist Anthony Taberna on his YouTube channel.

"As long as possible, I pursue stability, peace, so that we can do our jobs. I'm open to that. I'm always open to any approach," Marcos added.

The Vice President left Marcos' Cabinet as education secretary two years ago and then began criticizing Marcos.

Marcos said he is leaving the impeachment of Vice President Duterte in the hands of the Senate, which will resume session early June. The House impeached Duterte on Feb. 5.

“As for the impeachment, that’s already with the Senate. Let’s leave it to them. There’s a process for that. Let’s allow the process to take its course,” Marcos said.

Earlier in the day, Palace Press Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said Malacanang found Duterte's statement on the coming impeachment trial 'quite violent', expressing their hope that the vice president's remark that it would turn bloody would not be taken literally.

"The comment of our Vice President was quite violent. We hope that it is just a figure of speech and it should not be taken literally," Castro said.

On Saturday, Duterte said that she had no expectations on the verdict in the Senate impeachment and that she wanted the trial to be pushed because she wanted a 'bloodbath'.

"I don't have expectations of an acquittal or guilty verdict, I am already at peace. My lawyers are full throttle in preparing for the impeachment. They know a lot about laws as a legal recourse for their clients. I told them, really, I truly want a trial because I really want a bloodbath," Duterte said.

ML Partylist Rep. Leila De Lima commented on Sunday that Duterte's remark was 'toxic rhetoric'.

"In an impeachment trial, the only one who is on trial is the person impeached. So there can be no bloodbath. If any blood is spilled, it can only be that of the person impeached, not the prosecutors', not the senators-judges', not the administration's, not the people's. We will make sure of that," De Lima said in a Facebook post.

The Senate is scheduled to resume session on June 2 prior to the convening of the impeachment court scheduled on June 3. Yzabela Velez-White/DMS
