89-year-old former journalist shot dead inside home

An 89-year-old former journalist was gunned down inside his home iin Aklan Province on Tuesday evening, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

Juan Dayang, president emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. was declared dead on arrival at the Dr. Rafael Tumbokon Memorial Hospital after being shot in the back and neck.

Dayang was a columnist for Tempo, Manila Bulletin's English tabloid and Balita. He was interim mayor of Kalibo after the 1986 Edsa Revolution.

He later headed the Manila Overseas Press Club and the Publishers Association of the Philippines where he was chairman emeritus.

In a news briefing at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said probers are pursuing “good leads” and the closed-circuit television footage were being reviewed.
