Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya signed two grant contracts that are set to "make contribution to the livelihood and well-being of local communities across various regions of the Philippines" on Wednesday.

A total amount of $594,447 (about P34.47 million) will be funded through the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGOs and implemented by the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement International (OISCA International) and ChildFund Japan.

OISCA. in collaboration with the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI). will hold a short-term sericultural training, seminar, and construction of a silkworm farm and mulberry plantation in Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Misamis Oriental.

"Silk farming in Japan is not necessary as active as it is today, but by sharing Japan’s experience and technology to the Philippines, we hope to contribute to sustainable development of the silk industry," Endo added.

The ChildFund Japan, through its New Barangay Health Station, will help in enhancing healthcare access in mountainous areas of Davao del Sur by providing health education, primary healthcare facility, and equipment.

Endo said that the Japanese government has granted contracts for 67 projects of Japanese NGOs across various sectors in the Philippines which sums to more than 2 billion Japanese yen or approximately P779 million. The grant assistance was introduced in the country in 2002. Marie Manalili/DMS
