Five Makati cops transferred to Sulu for allegedly extorting from tourists

Five cops from the Makati City police station were relieved from their posts and reassigned to the province of Sulu after a complaint they extorted money from tourists..

Philippine National Police Director General Ronald Dela Rosa said Wednesday he ordered the transfer of a chief inspector and four police non-commissioned officers immediately

"I issued an order transferring them to Jolo, Sulu," Dela Rosa said in a news briefing.

Dela Rosa issued the order in response to the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday to sack and start summary dismissal proceedings against some people within the ranks of the Makati police station allegedly involved in extortion.

Duterte said he received reports a police official in Makati are extorting money from tourists.

"I have heard two reports about the Makati police, extorting tourists," said Duterte. Dela Rosa did not name the five policemen whom he said were tagged by a Singaporean businessman who gave P350,000 to these policemen.

The Singaporean allegedly gave the money to a retired police chief inspector, who in turn reportedly parted some of the amount to the five cops.

"These Makati police officers denied asking for money. That remains to be seen," said Dela Rosa. Emmanuel Tupas/DMS
