The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered a medical examination on former President Rodrigo Duterte to find out if he can face trial.

In a decision by the Pre-Trial Chamber 1, it said that it is tapping a forensic psychiatrist, a neuropsychiatrist and a geriatric and behavorial neurologist to evaluate the condition of the 80-year-old Duterte.

The team was ordered to submit its report to the court on October 31.

The ruling came after the ICC denied the motion of Duterte's lawyers for interim release last week, indicating that the former President was a flight risk.

Duterte was arrested by the Interpol and the Philippine National Police last March. He was brought to the International Criminal Court's detention cell at The Hague.

Duterte is being charged for crimes against humanity during his war on drugs when he was president. DMS
