President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is considering tapping Gen. Nicolas Torre, whom he relieved as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to another government position, according to Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, the former number two in the PNP organization, was named officer-in-charge of PNP.

"The President is very fond of Gen. Torre. In his brief tenure as chief and even before that as (Criminal Investigation and Detection Group) CIDG the President and Gen. Torre has had a wonderful and productive relationship," said Remulla in a press conference Tuesday after Torre was relieved.

Remulla said ''Torre did not violate any laws.''

"He has not been charged with any violations. He has not been charged criminally nor administratively. It is simply a choice of the President to take a new direction for the PNP," he added.

Torre, who was appointed PNP chief on June 2, will retire only on 2027 when he reaches 56. He holds a four-star rank.

As he assumed his new position, Nartatez assured to "continue the five-minute policy ...to assure the public of timely intervention and protection."

Remulla said Marcos considered reappointing Torre to another position in the government.

"He is being considered for another position because the President believes in his capacity, in his organizational strength, in his vast experience in the service so the President believes that he can be of use in other positions critical to the nation’s development," he said. Robina Asido/DMS
