The Senate voted on Wednesday to archive the impeachment complaint on Vice President Sara Duterte.
After five hours, Senate President Francis Escudero said 19 senators voted to archive the Duterte impeachment case. Four senators opposed and one, Senator Panfilo Lacson Jr., abstained.
The motion was put forward by Senator Rodante Marcoleta.
A few hours before the Senate convened, the spokesperson of the House impeachment panel told a press conference that he hoped that the Upper House will chose to wait for the outcome of the House's motion for reconsideration before the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered Duterte and her lawyer to comment on the House's motion for reconsideration.
The High Tribunal, voting 13-0, said the impeachment complaint by the House against Duterte was unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court said the House did not go through the proper procedure in approving the complaint against Duterte whom the latter accused of abuse in using confidential funds, culpable violation of the Constitution and the reported threats on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, his wife and other top officials.
It said the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte was filed on February 5, which it said violated the one-year ban in filing these, noting that three impeachment complaints were filed in December 2024. DMS
