More than 21,000 public buildings in Metro Manila will have to undergo retrofitting to improve their earthquake resilience, an official of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Wednesday.
"Many of these we will recommend for retrofitting. But we also have some that have already been retrofitted," Public Works Undersecretary Maria Catalina Cabral said in a press briefing in Malacanang.
In the National Capital Region (NCR), DPWH was able to assess and retrofit 124 public buildings. Another 425 buildings will also be retrofitted through an Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the World Bank.
Cabral said they also have retrofitting initiatives for bridges in the NCR,
She said they are helping the management of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) in retrofitting of their facilities.
"We also have technical assistance to various national governments ? like for example LRTA, we have already assisted DOTr (Department of Transportation) to assess the structural integrity of our railways and also light rails and MRTs," she said. DMS
