Four Filipinos remain "unaccounted for" after a strong magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook Myanmar on Friday, a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) official.

"In our latest data, four (Filipinos) are unaccounted for", Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo de Vega said in a radio interview on Sunday.

News reports said at least 1,600 persons died while 139 aare missing.

Two of the four missing Filipinos are residents of a building that collapsed in Myanmar.

De Vega said the DFA is planning to send a medical team of "roughly about 10 people if not tonight then tomorrow night" to areas affected by the Myanmar quake.

"We are planning to send people maybe tomorrow. Our National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) will deploy a medical team or team who knows how to search for a survivor", he added.

On Saturday, the Department of Health (DOH) said it is ready to send to Myanmar three Philippine Emergency Medical Assistance Teams (PEMATs) to the affected areas of the earthquake.

In a statement, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the medical teams from the Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital (PEMAT Luzon), Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Sanitarium (PEMAT Metro Manila), and Eastern Visayas Medical Center (PEMAT Visayas) are prepared for deployment if given the green light. Marie Manalili/DMS
