Philippines next to last in skills proficiency in business, technology, data science
The Philippines finished next to last among 100 countries in terms of skills
proficiency in business, technology, and data science, a report by an online platform showed.
In Coursera’s 2023 Global Skills Report released June 14, the Philippines ranked 99 out of 100 countries compared to last year when it placed 70 out of 102 countries.
The report's introduction said its data surfaces trends among registered learners on Coursera and are not necessarily representative of a country's population.
The report ranks skills and proficiency of learners in business, technology, and data science.
Business proficiency of the Philippines was shown to drop from 62 percent to 16 percent, technology proficiency went down from 29 percent to five percent, and data science fell from 21 percent to one percent.
Of Coursera’s registered learner base of 124 million, 12.8 million come from the Philippines.
According to the report, 51 percent of the Filipino learners of the platform are women and the median age is 31 years old.
The report also showed that 50 percent of Filipino learners have internet access and 50 percent are learning on mobile.
“While the skill proficiencies of learners in countries correlate with positive economic indicators, they are not necessarily representative of a population within a country, given that this data can only surface trends among those who are registered learners on Coursera,” it said.
“Nevertheless, we believe sharing these insights presents an opportunity to generate new, more granular insights and complement other, more traditional data sources on education,” it added. Jaspearl Tan/DMS
