Son of mayor shot in alleged shootout with cops in jail arriving Friday morning

Stricter security measures have been laid out at the national police headquarters in Camp Crame to ensure the safety of suspected drug lord Rolando "Kerwin" Espinosa Jr. who is expected arrive from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday.

A three-layered security cordon was set up in Camp Crame for Espinosa the moment he arrives from the airport from 2 am to 3 am, said Senior Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, spokesman of the Philippine National Police.

Espinosa’s father, Albuera municipal mayor Rolando Sr., was killed in an alleged shootout with policemen from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in an alleged encounter inside the Leyte sub-provincial jail last November 5.

There are two scenarios, said Carlos. One is Espinosa is to be presented to media upon his arrival in Camp Crame . The second is to have him rest first and face reporters later in the morning in a press conference.

Journalists who want to cover Espinosa in Camp Crame have to pass through three security inspections, said Carlos. The first layer is a registration desk in front of the Police Community Relations Group.

The second checkpoint is at the three entry points in front of the national headquarters and the last is at the main entrance door.

The camp's gate facing Boni Serrano Avenue is the only entrance open during the wee hours of Friday. Members of the press also have to be inspected and get clearance.

"All necessary preparations are being done," Carlos said in a news briefing on Thursday.

The young Espinosa is facing an arrest warrant from a Leyte court for possession of illegal drugs and firearms.

Medical examination and booking procedures on Espinosa will be done inside the Camp Crame .

PNP Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, in an earlier interview, wants Espinosa to just stay in Camp Crame and just have the warrant returned by a representative. Emmanuel Tupas/DMS
