Benguet Corp. said 50,000 metric tons of tailings materials leaked into Liang River after two typhoons hit northern Philippines last week. But in a statement, Benguet said it is taking responsibility the leak, which it considered “minor”.

“The minor leak of mine tailings discovered from Antamok tailings impoundment area caused by the unusually heavy rains brought by Super Typhoon Lawin and a breach in the drain tunnel of the underground Antamok mine has been put under control,” a Benguet statement said.

It added no further leaks were seen.

Benguet said its Antamok open pit mine has not been operating since 1998 while the Antamok underground mine was shut down since 1989.

The company said impounded tailings have solidified due to a long period of idleness..

There have been no reports of harm to individuals while possible damages to private property are being verified, Benguet said.

Benguet Corp is among the 20 mining firms recommended for suspension by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources after an industry audit in August. DMS
