Contingencies readied for Filipinos in Egypt
MANILA -- The Philippine government is preparing contingency measures for Filipinos in Egypt if tension escalates.
In a statement Sunday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said they have activated their crisis management team in Manila and put 24-hour duty officers who will monitor the anti-government protests against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
There are 6,569 Filipinos in Egypt, mostly in Cairo and Alexandria.
Special Assistant Enrico Fos of the DFA-Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workerユs Affairs is scheduled to leave for Cairo Monday to assist their embassy in Egypt .
The government advised Filipinos in Egypt to stay in their homes.
Deputy government spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Philippine embassy has allotted four relocation centers, three in Cairo and one in Alexandria, for Filipinos that will be affected by protests actions to force Mubarak to quit. ET/DMS
